Lock 'n' Load Arts

At Lock’n’Load we are endeavouring to develop a diverse and contemporary arts program. The aim is to showcase all forms of art including painting, performance, installation, photography, drawing, and video. We are committed to supporting local artists through opening events and ongoing promotion of their work. Through this arts program Lock’n’Load hopes to create an evolving, interactive environment in the bistro that contributes to Boundary Street¹s cultural diversity. We are currently rotating exhibitions on a monthly basis, and are seeking dedicated artists interested in being involved.

Sri Elkins

After working as a designer, animator and illustrator for renowned companies around the globe, Sri is now back in Australia working as a graphic/web designer, a writer and a painter. Since returning to Australia Sri has held successful exhibitions at Leafs Artspace in West End and the New Farm Art Stockroom. Sri works with acrylic on canvas to create works that are both abstract and illustrative. They are richly textured and coloured, and equally rough as they are delicate. Her paintings evade categorisation although they have been described as ethereal or humorously nonsensical. She describes the process of painting as Seeing in Sense… a meditative approach in which a story ultimately unfolds from the painting as a subconscious vehicle. If required to say what it is that she paints… she will tell you it is of possibilities, of the ‘otherness’ in which our dreams and desires merge… but sometimes it’s just pure whimsy too.

Simon Wong

While studying engineering at Brisbane’s Griffith University in the 90s Simon Wong discovered a passion for art and began oil painting in 1996. From 2000 to 2002 Simon worked as a professional art assistant for a prominent Australian artist and gained an insight into the Australian art world. Since this time his art has continued to grow and evolve to cover many styles and explore a wide range of subject matter and concepts. He creates small and large scale realist, conceptual and sometimes abstract paintings that revolve around the themes of time, change, human interaction and the human condition. His simple, yet sophisticated images have a human element which evokes sympathy with his subjects. Simon has been exhibiting in solo and group shows in Brisbane since 1998 at galleries and art-spaces such as the Powerhouse, Ric’s Bar, Soapbox Gallery and No.9 Gallery.

Elizabeth Barnes Hewlett

Elizabeth has exhibited in a range of galleries and art spaces in Brisbane and its surrounding regions since completing her studies in fine art. These include including Tub Gallery in Byron Bay, the Grosvener in Brisbane city, and Tongue & Groove in West End. Her work is also in a significant number of private collections around the globe. Elizabeth describes her work as a reflection of the interior self; seeking to presents emotions within a physical form. The colours and angles that strive to embrace and enhance thoughts or feelings in the works are often discovered in dreams, when Elizabeth considers the mind to be at its most honest. She hopes to stay true to intuition and never to dictate meaning, as each mind sees the world with a different shade. This is the beauty of life and thus of art. The works in this exhibition represent a continued exploration of these interests predominantly through painting with but also through a selection of sculptures.

Westfruits

Westfruits is a collaborative artbook project by Karen Batten & (M)-elly Nio aiming to develop a sense of community in West End. In the Westfruits book the artists have compiled a series of photos portraying people in West End, including some at Lock’n’Load, that have a connection to the area so as to reflect the local community. The project drew inspiration from indigenous culture as well as Freshfruits, a book documenting Japanese fashion in the late 90s. As part of the book participants were asked to respond to questions about themselves and West End that reflect ideas the artists were interested in exploring in their community. The artists’ process was essentially about creating something meaningful though an engagement with the community, and this book is a functional and tangible medium with which to achieve this. The project hopes to create space for the community to collaborate in making a visual culture for West End - from West End.
